A DAY DETECTING one to remember It was the first frost of the year and I was looking forward to getting out on a piece of set aside land which in the past had produced some nice hammered coins from all ages ranging from King Stephen to Charles I. I set out in my old series 2 Land Rover and within 10 minutes I was at the field. The land looked like at some time in the past was actually three fields but all hedges had been removed to leave a large plot. As I began I noticed the stubble in the field had just started to weaken, thanks to the frost I guess! So swinging the coil was no great task, hours passed with nothing special coming to light, perseverance paid off and I was rewarded with a really nice signal which, after digging just a few inches below the surface a beautiful James I hammered coin appeared in excellent condition, my first James I hammered I had ever found, and the last come to think of it!
After admiring the coin for a few minutes I placed it carefully in my finds box and continued. About ten minutes later another belting signal, this time an Edward I hammered also in lovely condition.
By this time I was overjoyed with my finds and would of been quite happy to call it a day and head home but something was telling me to carry on, so with the adrenaline pumping I got my head down and continued. The sun began to sink behind the trees and there was a distinct chill in the air. But what I was about to find would have warmed the bones of any detectorist. The signal was dull and quite weak but for some reason I decided to dig it, I pushed the spade into the firm ground and threw the lump of soil on the ground, I pushed the clump of earth with the base of my boot and it crumbled nicely, I swung the metal detector over the crumbled earth and this time the signal was crisp and high pitched, to my amazement out fell a piece of twisted gold bracelet about 2000 years old. It was and still is my best ever find and I think about it each time I'm getting demoralised by digging lumps of lead and bits of old tin! Metal detaching is all about patience, perseverance and a heap of luck.
